There should be three display modes:

  1. The current default of the active user’s full name
  2. The current user’s login window picture
  3. The user’s account name (i.e., jsmith, jdoe)

The first two could be switched between by dragging a simple bar like that used in OS 8.5-9 to switch the application menu between displaying names or just icons. The third might be a preference under the Login Items -> Fast User Switching section and would take the place of the first option.

  1. [...] Wincent Colauita’s WinSwitch software provides some of the features I proposed in my post about Apple’s Fast User Switching menu. Cool. Spotted [...]

  2. Along the same lines, it’d also be good if you could drag, or otherwise change the view, to ahow just the first name; in many situations the first name should suffice (e.g. families or couples), and it’s more compact and personable.

Re your mention of WinSwitch, it is a nice addition, and Wincent said that he’d look at implementing first name-only… it’s just a pity I don’t use Fast Switching (we don’t share a machine!)… but I missed the Cube transition enough to use Desktop Manager just for the Whizzy thrill!

…well almost, multiple desktops can actually be useful! : )

  3. The latest released version does have the ability to show first name only, as well as initials only. The dragging idea is a cool one. Don’t know if it’s possible to implement, but definitely a cool idea.
