OmniWeb 5b3, Part 1
March 3rd, 2004
First, my thanks to the Omni Group - this is the first version that has been stable enough to set as my default browser! I’ve still had a bomb or two, but nothing like the stability problems which plagued me in prior versions. The crashatosis has been cured.
General Notes
- The “Open In New Window” command available by right/Control-clicking on a tab in the drawer might be better worded as “Move to New Window” to clearly indicate that the tab in the existing window will disappear.
- This John Kerry campaign ad site caused OmniWeb to continually reload the page. I had to close the window because the Stop button couldn’t bring an end to the madness. Very odd.
Downloading
- The application mishandles the php PDF link at The Onion (towards the bottom in the gray box).
- Resizing the Safe Applications list does some wonky things.
- I don’t think the Downloads window toolbar Stop and Clear/Clear All buttons should accept click-through. The potential problems caused by the Stop button accepting click-through are somewhat mitigated by the resume feature, but I still don’t think it is a good idea.
Search Sites
- Safari’s Command-Return in the search field is a handy way to open the search results page in a new tab. Steal it.
- Option-clicking on a site in the engines list (the magnifying glass menu) could take you to the actual page. For example, if I hold down Option and click on Google, the Google homepage would open. If both Option and Command were depressed, the site would open in a new tab.
Workspaces
- Being able to select and switch workspaces from the Dock menu would be cool.
- Modifier-clicking on a Workspace Editor disclosure triangle could toggle all of the windows in that workspace, similar to how the Finder’s List view works when the triangle is Option-clicked.
- Displaying the tab names as tooltips on hover would make the Editor a bit easier to use when it is very small.
