Via Tim Jarrett: Jazz Drummer Elvin Jones of Coltrane Quintet Dies

I remember seeing Elvin play for the first time at Jazz Alley when I was in 8th grade. He was the first big name jazz drummer that I saw in person and a huge influence on my ongoing musical development. Fortunately, his playing is well documented on albums by John Coltrane (if you don’t have it, get “A Love Supreme”), Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, and those under his own name.

Rest in peace.
