Thompson, one of Bush’s cabinet secretaries, said Kerry would not work as hard as Bush to find bin Laden.

Bin Laden “knows that John Kerry will not be a persistent individual that is after him, that is going to be out to destroy him, like he is out to destroy America,” Thompson said. “We need to make sure that America is safe.”

A couple things:

• Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, and terrorists in general, cannot destroy the United States, no matter how much they would like to. Unlike the Soviets at the height of their power, terrorists don’t have an arsenal of ICBMs with which to deliver nuclear strikes on every major American city. They are murderers, not a threat to civilization.
• Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri are still out there. The implied “persistence” of George W. Bush hasn’t brought them to justice, more than three years later.
