Launch Services binds filetypes to applications, so I would think that Mac OS X could bind some generic keywords to certain filetypes, which are already mapped to applications that can handle them.

“Images” and “pictures” could be associated with PNG, GIF, JPEG, and TIFF, “music” and “sound” would be associated with MP3, AAC, OGG, AIFF, and WAV, etc.
