Toolbar Button Removal: Whence It Came

Rather than disappearing in a puff of smoke, toolbar buttons dragged off toolbars should slide back into the slot from which the “Customize Toolbar…” sheet appears. The poof could lead the user to believe that the button has been forever lost, rather than just put back in the button library.


In case you haven’t seen it, here is a link to
John Gruber’s (Daring Fireball) examination of OS X poofs. Interestingly he comes to the conclusion that “Toolbar are the one place Apple uses poofing where it is wholly appropriate”.
Gruber is wrong. Poofs are only appropriate when an object entirely disappears, not when it simply returns to the “place” from which it came. Thanks for pointing out the article.
