Lingering iTunes Bugs
December 27th, 2004
- The damn Yes/No dialogs remain and have seemingly proliferated.
- Beats per minute settings are not carried over when replacing tracks by (re)-importing them. In addition to the much lauded Quicksilver, BlackTree also whipped up a free BPM input tool.
- In the dialog that appears when submitting information to the CDDB, it is not made clear that the genre you assigned will not be altered and that another must be chosen only because the CDDB accepts only certain genres.
- The CDDB confirmation dialog requires that you click OK, but it’s the only option. Why present a dialog at all?
- The comments field does not indicate that it has a 255 character limit (it is actually the IDv3 spec that set this limitation, I believe). Seemingly any amount of text can be input, but it will always be trimmed to 255 characters.
- A character countdown line is one way this could be made clear. I remember such a thing being highlighted in 37signals‘ "Defensive Design for the Web".

- If the user reaches the 255 character limit by typing, the error beep sounds and a visual notification appears above the text field:

- Precisely where pasted text would be cut could be indicated using a highlight:

In a perfect world, the 255 character limitation would not exist.
