Dan Schimpf’s MacJournal is my text repository of choice. Congratulations to Dan on his deal with Mariner Software! I hope the additional marketing muscle will raise MacJournal’s profile and reward Dan’s great work (with cold hard cash).

There isn’t a lot I would change about MacJournal, but…

  1. The ability to display an entry’s keywords beneath it in the Journals drawer would be a nice View menu -> Show in Drawer settings option.

Displaying keywords beneath entry titles in MacJournal

  2. If possible, the keyword editing sheet’s OK button should become a normal button when a keyword is being edited since pressing Return commits the keyword rather than activating the default button.
  3. Command-Return could create a new keyword while the keyword editing sheet is focused.
  4. The New Journal Dock menu command should have ellipses.
  5. Color labeling of entry document icons would be of use.
  6. Format menu -> Clean up -> Remove Styling rather than Remove Styles.

  1. Hmm–Dan is one of my Poker buddies, but I didn’t realize he had sold MacJournal! Guess I should go to Poker Night more often :-).

  2. The information on his site leads me to believe he will retain control of the code, but Mariner will take care of marketing/promotion and payment processing.

Poker with buddies: good. Online poker spam comments on your weblog: not good.

  3. Having the keywords underneath would be cool. Very del.ici.ous and google base friendly!

For me the neatest thing about MacJournal is the full screen view: try it next time you have a mental block: nothing like a clear screen to clear the mind for action :-)
