Though not normally one to partake in memes, I’ll take the baton from Buzz

Total volume of music files on my computer

80.60 GB (14,984 tracks).

The last CD I bought

“Blue Spirits”, by Freddie Hubbard (1965/66) (iTMS or Amazon).

Hubbard shows off his composition and arranging skills as well as his trumpet virtuosity. The iTunes Music Store has some strange ideas about what is profane; track #5 is “Jodo”.

Song playing right now

“Somewhere In The East” by George Benson, from his “Beyond The Blue Horizon” album (1971) (iTMS or Amazon).

From hearing Benson on the radio you may think he’s just an R&B singer, but he is also one of the best jazz guitarists on the planet, a fact that his pop stardom obscures.

Five songs I listen to a lot, or mean a lot to me

  1. “Free For All” from Art Blakey’s album of the same name (1964) (iTMS or Amazon)
    Intense!
  2. “Fairy Tale Song” from Milton Nascimento’s “Milton” (1976) (iTMS or Amazon)
  3. “Black Ego” from Digable Planets’ “Blowout Comb” (1994) (iTMS [incomplete] or Amazon)
Many know “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)“, the song that made Digable Planets famous (which features a sample of the Jazz Messengers’ “Stretchin’”), but their second album is usually overlooked.
  4. “A Charmed Life” from J-Live’s “All of The Above” (2002) iTMS or Amazon)
  5. “Organized Colors” from Kenny Garrett’s “Simply Said” (1999) (iTMS [incomplete] or Amazon)

Five people to whom I’m passing this baton
