Finder Image Thumbnail Updating
September 9th, 2005
The Finder has a really irritating bug (Number 4250369) involving the automatically generated thumbnails of bitmap images. Simply put, they don’t automatically update when the image is altered.
- For safety, make a copy of an image.
- Place the image in a folder in Icon view, with the window set to display previews (this is toggled via the View menu -> View Options (Command-J) -> “Show icon preview” checkbox).
- Notice that the thumbnail is of the image.

- Open the image in Preview or GraphicConverter.
- Select a portion of the image with the rectangular marquee.
- Crop the image to the selected region (Command-K in Preview, Command-Y in GraphicConverter).
- Save the modified image.
- Return to the Finder window in which the file is displayed and notice that while the height and width dimension information has correctly updated, the thumbnail preview has not. Closing and reopening the window doesn’t correct the problem either; it seems to require restarting the Finder (via the Apple menu -> Force Quit dialog).

- Shake your fist in the air while yelling, “Curse you, Finder team!”*

Woody Shaw was a fantastic trumpet player and composer. His albums are somewhat obscure but worth the search.

Hehe, I filed the same one as well a while ago (#4114070).
Thanks, Sven. I added a note to my bug report stating that it was a duplicate of yours. Being able to search for existing bugs would be nice!
Do you know of any other way for correcting this problem? Restarting finder didnt work :(
